What is Gore-Tex?

Gore-Tex or PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a kind of synthesized materials that is already proved as safe material. Gore-Tex is porifera PTEF that has been known and accepted for making artificial blood vessels for over 50 years.

In addition, Gore-Tex is also preferred as material for facial plastic surgery including rhinoplasty, lip augmentation, and cheek augmentation, etc. Inside the structure of Gor-Tex, there are several small holes with the sizes varied from 10-30 microns making it different from silicone because it causes no contraction of capsule allowing surrounding tissues to grow through those holes. Consequently, you will gain a new nose shape that looks natural without any clue of plastic surgery. However, these small holes may be contracted reducing the height of nose bridge. Therefore, Gor-Tex and silicone have different disadvantages, i.e., Gor-Tex is able to be used with post-auricular cartilage for shaping nose tip to look like a drop of water. This technique will be recommended when it is considered as proper by the physician.

However, GORE-TEX is also able to reshape nose shape through correction of drooping tip. However, there may be inflammation therefore Gor-Tex is classified as material that is suitable for persons with sensitive skin or plastic surgery for correction.

 

Compatibility of GORE-TEX with Body Tissues

Post-Operative Care

  1. The patient has to sleep in fowler’s position during the first 2 days in order to relieve swelling.
  2. The patient should not sleep on his/her side for 1 week.
  3. The patient must stop drinking alcohol, spicy food, and fermented food around 1 week.
  4. The patient must wash his/her face with a mild soap after 24 hours of surgery.
  5. The patient must clean the right nose tip with a cotton bud dipped in boiled water.
  6. The patient must remove plasters after 3 days of surgery.
  7. The patient is not required to receive stitches off because chromic catgut is used in this surgery. For reduction, stitches off must be performed after 5 days of surgery.
  8. The physician will make an appointment for inspection after 1 month of surgery. Generally, nose will be recovered within 1 month approximately.

 

Revision Rhinoplasty

  1.   4. The patient has to clean his/her operative wound everyday with 0.9 % NSS in order to remove blood stains and dirt.
  5. Stitches off must be performed within 5 days.

 

 

Alarplasty

Alarplasty will be operated with persons with too large and wide nose wing and it can be operated under local anesthetic injection. The duration of this kind of surgery is around 30 minutes. Alarplay is operated by cutting the upper or lower edge of nose wing based on characteristics of each nose.
